WHO WE ARE

The WWF Nedbank Green Trust, founded in 1990 by Nedbank and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-SA), funds innovative projects to help solve some of the greatest societal and environmental challenges in South Africa.

True to our motto, ‘igniting new ways for people and nature to thrive’, we have, over the years, sought new paths, points of connection and solutions to ensure that people prosper. Our passion is for people and nature to coexist in harmony for the benefit of our country and the wellbeing of all.

The trust is funded through the Nedbank Green Affinity Programme, which has so far helped raise more than R300 million to support over 200 diverse environmental projects throughout South Africa.

HOW WE WORK

We work with partners and communities who are the keepers of our natural resources and direct their energy and efforts to key levers of change for South Africa’s future. From the early days of conserving the Kalahari lions and sea turtles to more recent climate change, water conservation and environmental leadership initiatives, the WWF Nedbank Green Trust has been there, leading the way. We recognised early on that the prosperity of South Africa depends on the relationships between governments, businesses, organisations and all people, and we make every effort to create and strengthen these relationships.

WWF South Africa, one of the most recognisable and respected independent conservation organisations in the world, provides the strategy that drives the work of the Green Trust. This strategy allows us to direct scarce resources and projects to key focus areas in order to make a difference.

Our success is revealed in that we have:

Tutored future environmental champions through our Environmental Leadership Project;

Preserved and conserved water for the people and species of South Africa through various initiatives, such as the Enkangala Grasslands Project and the Duzi-uMngeni Conservation Trust;

Rehabilitated and conserved our marine environment by implementing better marine planning and management through our Kogelberg and Fish for Life Projects;

Made inroads into disrupting criminal networks fuelling rhino poaching;

Collaborated with government and civil society to plot a food-secure South Africa for all through our Food Security Transformative Scenarios Project;

Created and secured livelihoods and began the reduction of food insecurity through our work with smallholder farmers;

DID YOU KNOW?

While continuing to use its well-known acronym, WWF’s name changed in 1986 from the World Wildlife Fund to the World Wide Fund for Nature.
