The Cape Floristic Region and the Succulent Karoo are two of the 35 global ecoregions we focus on, and we are committed to protecting them by constructively engaging with industries and communities dependent on the land for its natural resources.
Why does it matter?
There is significant diversity, but it is not protected enough and under immense pressure from unsustainable land use practices, such as mining and agriculture.

South Africa is home to nine biomes of which two are internationally-recognised biodiversity hotspots – the Succulent Karoo and Cape Floral Kingdom.

WHAT IS THE WWF NEDBANK GREEN TRUST DOING?
We ensure that significant ecological assets, such as Fynbos, Succulent Karoo, Enkangala Grasslands and Maputaland-Pondoland are secured, managed and restored. We also work in the Grasslands biome, which is considered a national conservation priority.
By doing this, we help improve the representation and cohesiveness of South Africa’s ecological networks by engaging in stewardship work on privately owned land to promote these ecological assets for protection and integration into sector development plans in key development areas, such as agriculture and mining.
